Enterprise has always had
a place in Sikh community building.
More than four centuries ago, as the settlement that would become Amritsar was taking shape, Guru Ram Das Ji understood that a thriving community needed more than a place to gather.
It needed livelihoods.
Traders and skilled artisans from different professions were encouraged to settle in the new town, helping establish its markets, commerce and economic life.
Under Guru Arjan Dev Ji, Amritsar continued to develop and flourish — growing not only as a spiritual centre, but also as a centre of enterprise, trade and community life.
It is a powerful idea that still resonates today:
